Written by Logan Henderson, Nick Furlong, Kendall Schmidt, and Lucky West, and performed by Big Time Rush, ‘I want you here all the time’ is not your typical pop song. It is a blend of a euphoric feeling combined with powerful lyrics to represent the feelings of missing someone, the highs, the lows, and how the heart takes over your mind.
The song begins with a unique blend of Big Time Rush’s vocals accompanied by a beat which feels soulful, familiar, and evokes a sense of nostalgia. The lyrics seamlessly intertwine the stages of missing someone, with the first verse beginning with Henderson performing the lines ‘Can’t stand it. Connection static, I can’t kick the habit’ which elicits the emotions of missing someone so strongly that it becomes stuck inside of your head and you cannot fight it. The song continues this feeling through a combination of emotions. Sadness. Love. Yet the beat follows an energetic and melancholic tone.
The song shares some elements of Henderson’s previous album project from 2018, Echoes of Departure and the Endless Street of dreams, Pt.1, a project which Furlong was closely involved with. The style of the album formed a similar sense of hyperrealism through dark pop music. The nostalgic yet euphoric feelings ‘I want you here all the time’ conveys are similar to those explored in Henderson’s album, therefore showcasing the lyrical and musical development between Furlong and Henderson.
When comparing the ending of the song ‘Generations’ from Henderson’s album and the ending of ‘I want you here all the time’ there are notable similarities between the two, for example, the end of both songs appear to have a distorted deep laughter sound effect before fading out. This could be a subtle hint towards the writers of both songs being the same, or it could even be a subtle meaning that Henderson is reflecting on the feelings he felt whilst producing previous songs.
Listeners can relate to ‘I want you here all the time’ through the relatability of hard-hitting lyrics and a mix of happy yet poignant instrumentals. Whether you have listened to Big Time Rush’s or Henderson’s music before or not, this song fosters a new era of music, something unique with a personal touch. It is likely that listeners will associate the song with past or future memories, whether it be missing a significant other, a friend, or a loved one.
A specific verse which really hits close to home for myself is ‘When I'm away, you're on my mind. Nothing but rain clouds in the sky. I’m not okay, I’m not alright. It comes in waves like the tears in my eyes’. The first time I listened to the verse, I had a numb yet comforting feeling combined with goosebumps across my skin. It felt extremely personal, these lyrics reflect not only missing loved ones that are still around, but also for those who are no longer with us. It was an emotional moment which I will never forget.
Overall, I highly recommend listening to this song. The first time you listen to it you experience a variety of emotions, the more you listen, the more you will uncover. Kendall Schmidt shared on the song announcement post on Instagram: "This song might actually be too good. I'm afraid we might cause a rift in the simulation and generate a portal that will transport people to a place of music bliss that could only be found in an alternate dimension." and I could not agree more.
