Fiaa Hamilton - Interview, ahead of her new single - Nobody is Perfect

Words & Interview: Grace Wearn, Eline Josephine, Grace Taylor

We sat down with Fiaa Hamilton, ahead of the realise of her new single - Nobody is perfect and chatted with her about the new single, music and her songwriting process.

What’s your earliest memory of falling in love with music?

When I was 8 and I wrote songs with my mum and I saw her smile, even though her mental health was really bad, music is so healing!

Can you walk us through your songwriting process?

I usually know what I’m about to write about, I go by feeling and what I’m emotionally connected too. We will then throw some chords together that matches that and I’ll close my eyes and start throwing some melody’s in, we will record my melody’s and then write some well suited deep lyrics.

Do you ever hide secret Easter egg type messages or personal nods in your songs?

Always! I have a song called table manners about being on a dinner table with a bunch of men from the industry and you’d never know that’s what it’s about but the name of the song is having to have table manners, I don’t even say the word table in the song.

How has social media impacted your music career?

Completely changed it! Independent artist can use social media to promote their careers, it gives us a chance in this crazy music world to be seen.

What song represents your journey so far, but is not one of your songs?

Ooh good question, I’d say Coldplay - Paradise! every time it’s got hard I’ve still believed in paradise.

Dream collaborative opportunity?

Mark Ronson, Coldplay, Lana Del Rey, the list goes on! I rate sooo many artists, I’d love to go on tour with Mimi Webb, I reckon we’d have the best time haha!

Who are your biggest influences/ inspiration in the music world and how do you think that’s impacted the way you write your songs?

My mum, she’s a beautiful songwriter and Amy Winehouse I’d say, everything I write is deep even when it’s upbeat.

If you could be a fly on the wall for the recording of any song/album throughout history, which would you pick and why?

I think possible Raye’s My 21st Century Blues, I think that’s the most latest genius album! I would have loved to watch her craft that.

Talk us through the story behind your new single “Nobody Is Perfect”?

It’s about accepting yourself but still fearing the future, it’s like being stuck between being ok with who you are and wanting to jump at flying but still being scared of falling, your asking yourself “are my wings fully formed yet” and then thinking actually ok it doesn’t matter if I do fall because I’m not perfect and it’s not meant to be perfect but it’s always going to be ok.

What else can we expect to see from you in the future?

I’m writing an Ep as we speak so lots more! And lots of Announcements coming soon.
