Ahead of their third time incredible set at Victorious Festival we sat down with Thom Rylance and Katie Lloyd of The Lottery Winners, we had a chat about typical British weather, dream duets, how much of an impact fans have to them and more. Read our transcribed interview below;

“The Lottery Winners! Thank you so much for your time today, how does it feel to be playing Victorious Festival here on the South Coast?”

Kate: It’s our third time here, I’m very much looking forward to it other than a bit scared of the weather but we’ll see if it holds off.

Thom: It will, I’ve got it on good authority. It’s gonna be fine.

“I’ll manifest for you that it won’t rain, what can new fans expect from your set that haven’t seen you before?”

Thom: New fans? I don’t think we have any hahaha! I don’t think we’re gonna get any new fans, I think the ones that like us? That’s enough.

“How do you decide the setlist for a festival set?”

Kate: We’ve got a short and sweet one today, we’ve only got half an hour so we need to decide that Thom shuts up hahah!

Thom: Yeah I’m not allowed to do much talking, so I’m gonna get it all out now.

At this point we went off the subject of questions and spoke about when I saw them live at the 1865 in Southampton

Grace: I actually saw you guys play Southampton in November and you were absolutely incredible.

Thom: Where did you see us?

Grace: 1865! (the venue)

Then the interview questions uno reversed on me from Thom

Thom: What did you like about it specifically?

Grace: I loved how funny you were. You called out by friend (in a jokey way) when all the Photographers were at the front and you posed for them.

Thom: Oh really?

Grace: Yeah, that was my friend that you called out ahahha!

Thom: What’s your friends name?

Grace: Grace, same as me (other Grace in the magazine).

Thom: I’m really sorry Grace for doing that and embarrassing you.

Side note she was not embarrassed she found it as hilarious as we all did!

Grace: She runs the magazine with me as well funnily enough!

Kate: Aww!

Back to the questions!

“Here at By The Fans Magazine we appreciate that music can become cemented in people’s lives in more ways than artists don’t always get to see. What is one fan interaction that stood out for you and you’ve remembered?”

Thom: I think we’re quite lucky, because we have them quite a lot don’t we? (at that point he looks at Kate). People come up to us and say how much a specific song or even just the band or community around them and how much it means to them. That is literally the most important thing to us like way better than getting No.1 albums or get paid loads of money to do Victorious Festival hahaha! It is way better in it?

(looks at Kate) have you got a specific one?

Kate: No, honest we get so many lovely messages every week. It’s my favourite part of the job.

Thom: You know sometimes I’ll just see a video of a wedding and it’s the first dance and it’s our song.

Grace: Oh that’s lovely!

Thom: Yeah really lame. Get a grip, have Ed Sheeran. Come on, Ed Sheeran’s done some way better ones!

“If you could borrow one artist or band from today’s lineup at the fest, and duet with them on stage for one song. Who are you choosing?”

Thom: I’m choosing Dizzee Rascal. I literally wrote a song and I wanted to try and get it to him but I had no way of getting it to him. And now he’s literally there.

At this point we all looked over to the next table as Dizzee was stood there with his family pre-show

Thom: Yeah I think probably him, cause I’ve got bars.

Grace: Fair enough!

cue the part where me and Thom have a bit of banter

Thom: You’re looking at me like you might think I haven’t got bars!

Grace: hahaha you definitely do have bars.

Thom: Thank you.

“Thank you so much and finally, what’s next for you guys on the horizon?”

Kate: We’re literally leaving this festival (after our set) getting on the ferry to the Isle of Wight to record our mambo number 5.

Thom: Yeah it’s just a cover of mambo number 5.

Grace: Yeah that’s just the whole album! (cover of mambo number 5)

Thom: We’ve got the trumpets, we’ve got it all. Wait what is mambo number 5 again? A little bit of Monica in my life? Is that it?

Kate: Every-time I say album number 5, I just think of mambo number 5.

Grace: hahaha, thank you both so much.
