Nickelback: Everything Under The Sun | Album Review
Nickelback have been a constant in my life. I’ve even caught a tribute show at a really cool local venue, so getting stuck into Everything Under The Sun was always going to be exciting. And honestly? They’ve done it again.
“Rattle The Cage”, featuring John 5, kicks things off with an absolute bang. Instant headbanger. The riff is ridiculously catchy, the “HEY YOU” is practically begging to be screamed in the car, and that guitar solo? It feels like the guitar is singing to you. Full stank face from the start.
“Bones For The Crows” keeps that energy going, opening with an eerie, almost Depeche Mode-esque feel before those pounding drums pull you in. Chad Kroeger’s rasp sounds incredible here. There’s something about it that belongs in a Game of Thrones battle scene, and once again, the guitar solo goes absolutely crazy. These first two tracks are probably my favourites.
But this album has plenty of heart alongside the heavy riffs. “I Already Know” brings a groovier, more radio-friendly sound that feels strangely nostalgic, like something you’d hear in a rom-com.
Then “Leave Me Behind” delivers proper divorced-dad rock, and I mean that as a compliment. The emotion, the beautiful guitar work and that build before the drums come crashing in gave me actual chills. New breakup song alert.
The acoustic opening of “If I Don’t Go” introduces a little country flavour, with a message about getting out of your comfort zone that really stuck with me.
“Make Me Love You” slows things down with piano and Kroeger’s voice taking centre stage. It reminds me a little of “Photograph”, with touches of South Africa’s own Prime Circle.
“Chasin Famous” brings back the heavier, slightly sexy rock energy, while “Simple Song” feels sweet enough to soundtrack a wedding.
“Technicolour Steamboat” is made for swaying in a crowd with your phone torch in the air. I can already picture it.
I also love the warmth behind “Lift Somebody Up”. Sometimes a song about simply being there for someone is exactly what you need.
“Bottled Dreams”, meanwhile, belongs in a slightly dodgy bar with pool tables and a jukebox, with a little Robbie Williams flavour in the vocals.
And “Last Night Was Fun”? Catchy, clap-along chaos. I could absolutely picture Finn covering it in Glee.
By the time the closing track brings back those funky guitars and instant stank-face riffs, I’m completely sold. It’s a badass way to finish an album that gives you plenty to headbang, sing and get emotional to.
The heavier tracks are my personal highlights, but there genuinely isn’t a song here I didn’t enjoy. Nickelback, you’ve done it again. This one’s going on repeat.
And honestly, I’m so grateful I get to do this. Getting to hear albums from such incredible artists before they’re released, spend time with the music and share my thoughts is something I’ll never take for granted. As someone who loves music this much, it’s an absolute honour.
